Cloverfield – the original – is a personal favourite, as is last year’s Room. So 10 Cloverfield Lane, at least on paper, sounds almost too good to be true. But it sure comes close. But let’s just leave it at this: With the instant classic Midnight Special and now this, I wouldn’t be surprised if in another 8 years, I look back on 2016 with the same fondness as I have for 2008.

The film grips you from the get go and in his directorial debut Dan Trachtenberg has kept a tight rein on the proceedings. By focussing on three people in an enclosed space, he gives the grand disaster movie imagery a miss, which works well as we are imagining all manner of horrid things.

The B-movie trappings are given a fresh lick of paint, thanks to a high level of craftsmanship on both sides of the camera. The script never resorts to stereotypes and it delivers a seat-edge series of suspenseful sequences with tensions always threatening to erupt into violence. This isn’t a sequel, but a “blood relative”, which was based on a script entirely unrelated to the Abrams-produced Cloverfield banner.
